Synopsis

All the action... without switching channels!

Video Vixens purports to be a satire of the phony liberalism that resulted in the permissiveness of the 1980s. A libidinous TV executive decides to stage an awards show. But not just any awards show: this one will honor the finest achievements in the world of filmed p*rnography.

Everywhere I turn, I run into George "Buck" Flowers. Probably because I watch stuff like Video Vixens on a Monday night as part of my normal routine.

A TV executive decides to broadcast a stag films awards show because he thinks people are too sexually repressed (in 1975?!?), and he forces a puritan movie reviewer to host it. The awards show, with clips and commercials, should have been the whole film. All the planning with the executive and an established p*rn director (George 'Buck' Flower) could have been a 3 minute framing device, but instead it's half of the running time, and it's so boring. A lot of the clips from the fake p*rn films are boring too, and every sex scene is rapey. There's a Dragnet parody that's pretty good and the brief commercials are entertaining, because at least they feel like a comedy. But mostly, it's just dull.

There are some funny bits in here, mostly the fake commercials for sleazy products and the little kid obsessed with putting people on his “smut list” for being perverts, but otherwise there’s a really uncomfortable undertone wherein every featured fake p*rno is basically predicated around violence against women or outright rape, and treated completely nonchalantly. I don’t remember 70s p*rn being so focused on sexual violence. What the hell was going on with this movie? The tone of the framing device conflicts with the rest of the movie, there isn’t one legitimately likable character, it’s just a mess all over, but a slightly charming one.

Unfortunately though I can now no longer say I’ve lived life without seeing George “Buck” Flowers dick/balls/ass, and that really was not an item I wanted to check off that list.

An oddity in Ron Sullivan’s pre-hardcore filmography, BLACK SOCKS was one of two LA lensed features Sullivan made in 72/3 with an all SoCal cast and all NYC crew.
The cast is comprised of an ensemble of Hollywood’s finest sexploitation and hardcore thespians, headed by Norman Fields and Buck Flower, and all in top form. Arthur Marks makes everything look bigger than it undoubtedly was, with a lengthy, backlit dolly shot being the visual highlight.
And then there’s the script…going for a “respectable” X but falling woefully short in raunch content (the language is stronger than anything actually showing up on screen) and feeling extremely dated by its 1975 release. Too much of a yawn.

Considering VIDEO VIXENS! is the work of future prolific adult film director Ron Sullivan (who used "Henri Pachard" for the majority of his XXX filmography), it's kind of surprising to me that it's in the erotica content where this film fails most spectacularly. The spoofs of sex films are just not very good and barely rise above the worst of the authentic product from that era. The "dirty" commercials are marginally better, but they are wildly hit and miss. Where this movie truly shines is in the clever premise and the comic performances, especially Buck Flower, Philip Luther, and Norman Fields. After seeing Flower's brilliant turn as the boorish Rex Boorski, I had no doubt in my mind why Alex…

Video Vixens features a premise in which a television executive decides to air an X-rated Oscars on his failing network (most of the film is then elements of this awards show and commercials and clips from the "movies".) Interestingly, he’s inspired by something very Infowars: he claims that something in soap is turning America gay – (chlorapheme?), so broadcasting good ol' heterosexual sex will set America straight.

You can readily imagine how all over the place this decidedly un-PC movie is. It is to its credit, an artifact of its time, when sex humor was unfiltered and occasionally amusing.

I think I heard the line: "I used to be able to remember the names of all types of nipples" at one point.

My notes included: Trump, hom*ophobia, and Tex Avery, though as not a very good note-taker, I can’t say why exactly.

Weak sexploitation satire notable as an early directorial effort from the future Henri Pachard (and the origin of Alex de Rezny's 90's pseudonym) but not much else. The humor is often unfunny and gross, with an uncomfortable amount of it predicated on rape.

    Mid-80's sex comedy romp.

A studio exec comes up with the idea to revolutionize television by hosting a p*rn awards with commensurate commercials on national TV.

George 'Buck' Flower stars as Rex Boorski, p*rn director and star, is recruited along with the gorgeous Robyn Hilton to co-host the awards ceremony. In order to legitimize the awards they force volunteer a local critic to host as well.

Some of the commercials and trailers shown during the awards were ok but nothing was knock down hilarious. This flick was pretty risqué for the mid-70's.

Lovely ladies abound in this one.

If you watch this one, be ready for some full-frontal from both the guys and gals.

I have to admit I laughed a couple times, especially at the Twinkle Twat product. No, I'm not going to tell you what it is.

This had some pretty clever moments for a T&A vehicle. That said, 80% of the comedy is (expectedly) corny and sophom*oric with plenty of off-color and offensive jokes sprinkled in.

The wraparound for T&A in this movie is that an edgy television executive is going to broadcast an "adult Academy Awards" hosted by the station's most uptight anchor. The clips shown from the winning p*rnos are all VERY rape-y aside from the one in which the female characters actual complained of being raped. They enthusiastically consent to screwing the guy "with a massive hose" and then report to the police they've been assaulted. That dynamic had to have been purposeful; it’s kinda blatant.

The real reason to watch Video Vixens!

  • Review by Kyle B. ★★★★

Very, very similar to "If You Don’t Stop It…You’ll Go Blind!!!"--a bunch of low-brow, politically incorrect sex jokes and gags with mild T and A (and D) contained in a loose wraparound. I had seen some of the skits before, but I cannot pinpoint exactly where (possibly lifted from "If You Don't Stop" or vice versa?). Another quick, fun film that got a few good laughs out of me.

Although no Uschi Digard this time :(
