THE PLAIN DEALER, TUESDAY, AUGUST 23, 1983- Barker and Sorensen enjoy farm ponds for bass fishing RED HAW, 0. It's no easy trick to find this little Ashland County town. And it's even tougher to find a little pond on the "back 40" of a little dirtroad farm just outside of Red Haw. The small, three-acre patch of water is there, though, and swimming around in it yesterday were plenty of largemouth bass, hungry enough to take whack at a lure thrown their way. Keeping them on their toes were some older and bigger relatives, just hungry but wary enough to have become the kings of this small domain.

Those older, wiser, big bass are the ones fishermen Lary Sorensen and Len Barker of the Indians and hunting friend Carl Yates, who knows this stretch of farm land like the back his hand, were after. "Farm ponds produce the best Ohio bass fishing. If you want to catch big bass, this is the way to do it," said Barker, who scours the Buckeye countryside each summer looking for likely bassin' holes. With a small metal fishing boat trailered behind his fourwheel drive truck, it's an easy job reach some of the more inaccessible spots. With dawn just over his shoulder Barker hooked the first bass of the day on one of his own fishing lures, Barker Bass Striker, and quickly released the scrappy little fellow.

Sorensen added a couple more small bass, tossing a gaudy chartreuse and motor oil-colored plastic worm, spar- 4 weightlifters lose medals using steroids FROM FIRST SPORTS PAGE Federation for possible further sanctions. Last night, Chilean sources reported that 14 more athletes would be named today as steroid users by the medical commission. That batch, the sources said, would include an unidentified American lifter and Jacques Oliger, a triple-silver medalist in the over-243 pound class from Chile. A U.S. official confirmed that an American lifter might be under investigation.

The only U.S. gold medals in weightlifting were produced by Cal Schake of Butler, in the snatch at 164 pounds, and Jeff Michels of Chicago, who swept the 243-pound class. In addition to his world mark of 303.6 pounds in the snatch, Nunez set Pan Am marks of 358 in the jerk and total weight of 661 at 132. Greavette, from New Westminster, British Columbia, set Pan Am records in the snatch, at 341 pounds and total weight, 748 pounds, at 182. (AP) Trutone Lobell grabbed the lead around the first turn and eased to a two-length victory last night in the $668,000 Sheppard Pace at Yonkers Raceway. In winning the richest horse race in New York State history, Trutone Lobell beat Apache Circle, driven by Eldon Harner, to the wire in a stakes record 1:58 3-5 for the mile. The 2-year-old son of Nero collected $334,000 to push his earnings to $805,130 in nine starts this year.

New plan to determine Kentucky Derby field LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) The Downs board of directors approved yesterday D'ARCY EGAN OUTDOORS kling with metal flake. After wading through a couple dozen small bass, a hefty threepounder finally fell for a plastic a as of a to a "It's time to change ponds," said Barker. "Carl has one down the road that's supposed to be outstanding." A short drive later, Yates checked with the owner of an attractive, good-sized lake on the Ashland outskirts. It boasts gin-clear water that lets you see bass flee for deeper water when disturbed along the shoreline.

A few minutes later the boat was off the trailer and back in water, the electric motor humming. With the wind pushing the boat slowly along the bank, the first drift started slowly. Suddenly the action picked up and Barker and Sorenson both had leaping largemouth at the end of their lines. "If you had some nightcrawlers, I'd show you some big bass and bluegills," said Yates, a confirmed panfish man. Nevertheless, his Rapala is fooling a share of the bass.

"You don't have to catch fish to have a good fishing trip but it sure helps," said Barker, setting the increase muscle bulk and build strength. Although their use is widely rumored, especially among weightlifters and weight throwers in track, only a few cases have been confirmed and acted upon by international authorities. One of the best-known cases was that of U.S. shotputter Ben Plucknett, who was stripped a world record and banned for life from amateur track competition. That sanction later was reduced to 18 months, and he regained his eligibility in the summer of 1982.

One of the most immediate effects of Vasquez' announcement was seen in the medals count and among the athletes and coaches. Cuba was a distant second to the United States in both gold and total medals at the start of yesterday's eighth day of competition, with Canada third, and the loss of the medals made the deficits even larger. The revised count, before any medals were awarded yesterday, was 82 gold medals and 166 overall for the United States, 47 golds and 102 total medals for Cuba and 9 golds and 63 total medals for Canada. Another U.S. swim record for Greavette CARACAS (AP) The United States' team continued to dominate competition at the ninth Pan American Games last night and set another world record in swimming.

Swimming concluded with the U.S. men's 400-meter medley relay squad of Rowdy Gaines, Steve Lundquist, Rick Carey and Matt Gribble timed in a record 3 minutes 40.42 seconds. The U.S. team piled up four swimming golds and five in all, though the focus of the eighth day of competition was on the drug crackdown: (Story Page 1-E.) Boxers Pernell Wittaker of Norfolk, and Jerry Page of Atlanta easily advanced to the semifinals, joining all nine of their U.S. teammates.

Whittaker knocked out Kenworth Minus of the Bahamas at 1:50 of the first round in the 132-pound class. Page scored a 4-1 decision over Jose Magallenes of Venezuela. First baseman Mark McGwire cracked his sixth home run in the last five games, leading the unbeaten U.S. baseball team to a 10-3 rout of Venezuela. Righthander Tim Belcher, from Mount Vernon Nazarene College in Ohio, got the victory.

"Farm pond fishing is the ultimate in fun fishing, and it really produces, confirmed Richard Advey of Willoughby Hills, who runs the Ohio Bass Tournament Circuit (OBTC). "My biggest bass came out of a Chardon farm pond less than an acre in size. Do I remember it? It was the 18th of June, 1971, about 1 p.m. I was doing all the things you shouldn't fishing in mid-day, under a hot sun and a high, blue sky.

"He weighed eight pounds, four ounces and still hangs over my dresser," said Advey. Larry Snyder of Millersburg, 0., won this month's OBTC adventure on the Ohio River's Willow Island Pool, just north of Marietta, on Sunday. Snyder hauled in three bass weighing five pounds, seven ounces to beat 165 anglers and win $1,518. Carl Rath of Mansfield caught four bass (4-10) to finish second, followed by Clevelanders Perry McDannel (four bass, 4-4) and Robert Bateman (three bass, 3 3-12). Rob Yurko of Cleveland and Pat Belt of Sheffield Lake shared big bass honors, both weighing in 2-9 bass.

GCGA set to crown a new queen The Greater Cleveland Golf Association will have a new champion i in its 27th annual tournament that gets under way today at the Country Club of Ashland. Hopefully, I'll be able to play again next Qualifying for match-play brackets is today at Ashland. With Scott out of the tournament she has so dominated, the new champion could come from a group that includes Jeanne Pritchard of Medina, Jane Kang of Spring Valley or Cindy Mathis of Wooster. Bob Fairchild won his second straight Canterbury Golf Club men's championship and sixth overall Sunday, defeating Joe McGowan II, 5 and 4. Fairchild, who earlier this summer won the Northeast Ohio Amateur championship, shot an even-par 72 in the morning round when he jumped to a 6-up lead.

He ended the match with a birdie on the 14th hole.
