"His doctors are extremely happy with how he's moving ahead.

He's progressing right along," said hospital spokesman George Hatzfeld. Hatzfeld said Pendergrass is increasingly active and is able to communicate fully with doctors and family members. He said doctors are continuing to monitor minor infections in the singer's hip and lungs, conditions that threatened to extend Pendergrass's recovery period. Pendergrass, 36, was paralyzed from the waist down after his $108,000 slainmed into a tree in Philadelphia in March 1982, seriously injuring his spinal column. Hatzfeld said the singer suffered from the hip infection before his specially equipped van plowed into a utility pole in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, Thursday, tearing a 4-inch gash in his liver and lacerating his legs and feet.

Pendergrass also suffered a bruised right lung in the accident. PA DE 1-800-526-3361 Phone Three Shamokin children show possible signs of lead toxicity HARRISBURG Only three of 187 preschool children (1.6 percent) in the Shamokin area tested for levels of lead in their blood show signs of possible "toxicity," according to the results of a study released today by the state Health Department. The average blood level of the 187 children was 12 micrograms per deciliter compared to the national average of 16.5 micrograms per deciliter. "Put simply," said Dr. James Fox of the Health Department's Environmental Health Division, "the average blood lead level of the Shamokin children we tested was below the national average." FOx cited a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey released in 1982 that lists 30 micrograms per deciliter as the point health officials considered to be excessive amounts of lead in the blood. "The -federal Centers for Disease Control revised that figure last year 25 micrograms per deciliter," Fox said.

"But whichever national figure one chooses, the Shamokin area children are well below levels considerd to be excessive." "It is apparent from our data, and a similar study of Shamokin children conducted by the Geisinger Medical Center, that a general environmental problem does not exist in the area. The few children exhibiting excessive lead blood levels may have a specific or isolated problem such as exposure to lead-based household paint rather than a general environmental lead problem such as lead contaminated drinking Fox said. He said the Health Department is recommending that the three children be retested and examined by their personal physicians. He said the Health Department will "further investigate possible sources of lead exposure or possible nutritional deficiencies" in the three, as well as 10 other children whose levels were not considered toxic, but did indicate some undue exposure to lead. He said letters detailing individual test results were being mailed to parents of the 187 children.

In addition, Dr. Steven Messner, superintendent of the Shamokin Area School District, will receive a report of the Big Four 9801 Health Department's findings, Fox said.
