So, let’s get a few technical issues out of the way first.

Chili Powder v Chile Pepper

ChilePowder (with an ‘e’) is simply chile peppers that have been dried and ground into a powder. Some common chile powders are Cayenne Chile Powder, Ancho Chile Powder, and Chipotle Chile Powder. But, any chile can be dried and ground into a powder.

ChiliPowder, also known as Chili Seasoning or Chili Powder Blend (with an ‘i’), takes that Chile Powder and mixes in other spices to create a seasoning blend. Chili Powder is commonly used for making a pot of chili or pinto beans, tacos, soup, enchiladas, and seasoning grilled meat. But, truthfully, the uses for Chili Powder are endless, which is why it is often used in my home.

We all have those spices and other pantry staples that we buy repeatedly and get a bit panicky when we run out. Chili Seasoning is one of those pantry staples that I like to keep on hand,. In fact, I make my own nine times out of ten. I buy my spices in bulk from our local health food store andMy Spice Sage, so I typically have what I need to whip up a batch of this Chili Seasoning Recipe.

Without getting too far into the weeds, let’s spend a few more minutes talking about a few different chile (with an e) powders because they are not all the same.

Bring the Heat

My chili powder recipe usesancho chile powderas the base. Dried and ground poblano peppers, which are low on the Scoville scale (1,250 out of 15,000,000,000), are actually the pepper in ancho chile powder. This lower heat makes them a good pepper base without a great deal of heat. I also add a littlechipotle chile powderto my recipe. Chipotle chile powder is dried and smoked jalapeno peppers. I love the smokiness that chipotle powder imparts, as well as the added heat (5,000 out of 15,000,000). I stop there with my chiles, but you may want to add more head. Consider adding some cayenne powder, which has a Scoville score of 50,000 to your mix.

And if you really want to go crazy, add somehabanero powder(150,000) orCarolina reaper powder(1,500,000) to your chili seasoning recipe.

I use this Chili Seasoning Powder in my Crockpot Turkey Chili and as a base for my Taco Seasoning.
