When April showers start giving way to May flowers, there is no better place to be than a botanical garden. Luckily, the Holland area has no shortage of botanical gardens. It's one of the thingsour real estate agents love most about the area and something new homeowners tend to enjoy, too. If you're in the mood to gaze upon roses and tulips, here are some local botanical gardens you can visit.

  • Riverview Park: 95 College Ave., Holland, MI 49423
    Riverview Park
began as a municipal ballpark in 1918, but it has since become so much more. Now, the park boasts a botanical area with more than 100,000 tulips. It's incredible to see them all in bloom at the same time.

In addition to the tulip field, Riverview Park also has walking paths with viewing decks overlooking a marsh. There's also a boardwalk, a playspacefor youngerkids, and several athletic fields. This would be a great place to spend an afternoon with your family.

  • Jonker's Garden: 897 Lincoln Ave., Holland, MI 49423
Jonker's Garden is a garden center and not a botanical garden. However, it's such an incredible garden center that walking through it in the spring certainly feels like visiting a botanical garden. The store grows countless annuals and perennials in their greenhouses. You can walk through the space and admire them all.

Pick up a few plants at Jonker's Garden, and you can start your own botanical garden at your new home. The employees can give advice on insect control, disease prevention, plant selection, and more.

  • Dutch Village: 12350 James St., Holland, MI 49424
Dutch Village is a replica of a Netherlands village. In the spring, the village is best known for its tulip fields. They typically remain in bloom until the third week of May. Not only can you visit the village and admire the tulips, but they are also sold in the on-site gift shop.

In addition to the tulip fields, Dutch Village also has an assortment of fun rides, including the Giant Wooden Shoe Slide and the Dutch Chair Swing Ride. They host demonstrations on pottery and cheese making, and there are several restaurants and cafes on-site.

  • Windmill Island Gardens: 270 S. River Ave., Holland, MI 49423
    Windmill Island Gardens
is a lovely place to learn more about the area's Dutch heritage. In the spring, the gardens are in bloom with more than 150,000 tulips, plus a variety of other annuals and perennials. The gardens have manicured walking trails winding through them.

Windmill Island Gardens also has a gift shop that sells various Dutch treats. Plus, there is an antique carousel that kids can ride. Oftenduring the day, someone walks around and plays a street organ, which makes for a relaxing ambiance.

  • Veldheer: 12755 Quincy St., Holland, MI 49424
    Veldheer Tulip Gardens
now boasts more than 5 million tulips many are white, and some are brightly colored. They also plant various other perennials and annuals from around the world. The hyacinths and daffodils are beautiful in early May.

At Veldheer Tulip Gardens, you can walk through and enjoy the flowers, or you can purchase some of your own. They also sell seeds and a variety of other gardening tools and supplies. In the fall, you can purchase tulip bulbs to plant in your own yard or garden.
